Invading Oahu:

All about the exotic, alien, invasive (and Native) species on Oahu, HI

What is this site for?

Invading Oahu is a compendium for plant and animal species on Oahu, sharing information on native and nonnative species while also highlighting the dangers of invasive species. It serves as a place to learn about our Island Home and the threats it is currently facing, as well as how to make a difference in our communities. It includes activity suggestions for engaging classrooms or individuals in the real-world.

Why should we care?

The Hawaiian Islands exist about 2,400 miles away from the closest landmass, and contain an extremely unique native ecosystem where around 90% of its native species are endemic. Unfortunately, more than 30% of all federally listed endangered and threatened species are found in Hawaii, many of those put at risk by introduced exotic species. Oahu, the most populated Hawaiian Island, has predictably been hit hard by invasive species, with some ecoregions almost entirely gone.
