All about “Invading Oahu”

Hawaii is home to more than 30% of all federally listed endangered and threatened species, with such a unique ecosystem that around 90% of its native species are also endemic (not found anywhere else).

Invasive species can be catastrophic in any ecosystem, but especially in island ecosystems. Because our ecosystems exist so separated from those in the continent, they are entirely unique in their connections and use of resources. While this may lead to certain advantages, it also puts them at risk to diseases and insects brought in by humans. It may also leave them at risk of exploitation by invasive species, including both nonnative plants and animals.

Knowledge of species has been shown to improve public opinion and advocacy for removal of invasive and exotic species, as well as restoration of degraded ecosystems. Hawaii has been a frontrunner for novel approaches to invasive species management, however, there is still a lack of knowledge and understanding amongst the public.  This website hopes to overcome this knowledge gap by providing the information needed to not only understand the issues surrounding invasive species, but also how to identify them. Each blog post in the learning center will end with an activity guide for teachers, parents, or other interested parties. Additionally, I hope to include more interactive elements over time, including quizzes, story maps, and games in order to engage younger and older audiences alike.

This website started as project for my graduate program as a way to bridge a gap in conservation knowledge and understanding. Through your help, I hope to grow it to so much more. So please, send me your thoughts and ideas, comment on all the blogs, and engage your schools and communities!
